Get hooked on Quick Reads for World Book Day (Thurs 2 March 2006)

A range of bestselling writers, including Ruth Rendell, Conn Iggulden, Maeve Binchy, Richard Branson, and Joanna Trollope, are all taking part in a major new literacy initiative for World Book Day this year which is to held on Thurs 2 March. Quick Reads, an innovative series of short and accessible fiction and non-fiction, are aimed at the millions of people in the who just don’t have time to read or who struggle to finish a book.

Happily Ever After? What is the Nation's Favourite Happy Ending?

World Book Day (which is on Thurs 2 March 2006) today launches a poll to find out the effect on the nation’s psyche of happy endings. What is the nation’s favourite happy ending? Does everyone agree on whether particular books end happily? Hollywood is famous for changing the endings of books to make them happier – most recently with the slushier US version of Pride and Prejudice. Should some of literature’s most famous tragic endings be rewritten to end more upliftingly?

“Out of the Box” - by Over the Bridge Theatre Company

"Over the Bridge" is an innovative theatre company of learning disabled actors from Skye and Lochalsh. Their first production, "Out of the Box" will be performed at the Aros Theatre, Portree on Fri 3 and Sat 4 Feb 2006 at 7.30pm. "Out of the Box" is a devised play from the participants' own experiences, dreams and aspirations, which also features local musicians, as well as singers from Coisir Sgire Phortrigh.

Plans are well advanced for the first performance in Orkney of one of the greatest pieces of choral music ever written – J S Bach’s “St Matthew Passion”. The performance will take place at St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall on 11 March 2006 at 6pm.

The Dangerfields - 'Born to Rock' Scottish Tour

Belfast Punk Rockers The Dangerfields are returning to Scotland as part of a UK tour put together to promote debut album ‘Born To Rock’ released through Rock N’ Roll Records. The Dangerfields founder member, drummer & vocalist, Andrew Griswold tells about the bands anticipation for this tour “'Born To Rock' is going down a storm and we just can't wait to hit the road again!”

Up-Helly-Aa Day Concert

This years Up-Helly-Aa day concert on 31 January 2006 in the Garrison Theatre, the ‘Fiery Session’, promises to be one of the most exciting ever, according to Shetland Arts Trust Music Development Officer Davie Gardner, with not only some of Shetland’s most popular and diverse acts taking part, but also the whole event is being filmed by BBC 4 for a programme about Shetland music.

Antarctic Art Show in Aberfeldy

Scottish Artist, Malize McBride, is due to exhibit her new body of work, ‘Ice and Light – Antarctica’, in Perthshire’s exciting new art gallery in Aberfeldy Watermill, from Saturday 25th February until Saturday 2nd April. The work completes a two-year project, which began with her polar journey in 2004.

Local artist’s success in prestigious national printmaking exhibition

Work by Mull artist Dawn Reade has been chosen from over 1250 entries to exhibit at ‘Originals 06: The Contemporary Printmaking Show’ at the Mall Galleries in central London. The exhibition will take place from 15th to 25th February 2006 and will cover a wide range of contemporary printmaking media and styles. This year’s Private View falls on 14th February, when the show will be officially opened by Sir Peter Blake.
