Channel 4 launch Modern Apprentice Scheme
Channel 4 launch Modern Apprentice Scheme
21 May 2004

Channel 4, in partnership with the Glasgow based Research Centre, will be piloting a new Modern Apprenticeship within the Channel.

The training scheme will provide two people between the ages of sixteen to twenty five with an opportunity to develop their business administration skills within a multi-media broadcaster.

The qualification, a Foundation Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration, will contain a mix of on-the-job training as well as a range of personal development courses.

The eighteen month scheme will be launched in the Summer with one trainee based in Channel 4’s Horseferry Road offices and the other in the Channel’s Nations and Regions office based in Glasgow.

The London based traineeship will be advertised in the coming month with the Scottish place coming on stream later in the summer.  Both traineeships will be advertised on the IDEASFACTORY Scotland website www.channel4.com/ideasfactoryscotland – so keep your eyes peeled!

“This is a big step forward for Channel 4.” said Alec McPhedran, Training and Development Manager for Channel 4. “In the past we have sponsored hundreds of young people in to the industry but, because of the nature of Modern Apprenticeships, it has not been easy to take trainees on within our own organisation. The Research Centre, Scottish Screen and Westminster City College have been brilliant in having a really flexible approach to making the award fit our industry.”

Carol Sinclair, Chief Executive of The Research Centre said “Channel 4 approached us to pilot this programme based on our other successes in media talent development. We are looking forward to making this project work. There is a lot of interest in this from other broadcasters and media organisations. It will be trainee focused and built around support from Channel 4 and guidance from the Research Centre.”
