Benchtours are back in the Highlands with two of Anton Chekhov's hilarious plays, The Bear and The Proposal.
Love, lust, bankruptcy and brittle furniture hilariously served up in a chaotic night of passion, anger and ridiculousness. benchtours are delighted to present these superb – and far too rarely performed - examples of Chekhov’s comic genius, a brilliant production full of energy and total mayhem.
In The Bear, a burly and misogynistic landowner called Smirnov falls for the grieving widow of a man who owed him money, while in The Proposal a young hypochondriac ends up in a heated argument with the girl he originally came to ask in marriage.
In both plays, the characters are driven by such a ridiculous sense of outrage, that in their anger, they lose the ability to see their best interests and become the kind of tragicomic anti-heroes the audience just loves to laugh at! A brilliant night out!
benchtours have been producing their unique brand of contemporary theatre for the last 10 years, including their acclaimed version of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard in 2002, and ALICE, a new adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, in 2003.
