When Club Film on Skye won the ‘Best Film Club Programme of the Year’ in 2003, it was partly its ability to attract big names in the film world to Skye that caught the judges’ attention.
Andrew Macdonald, the film producer, is visiting Skye this Sunday (14 March) as part of a screening and post-film discussion of his latest movie 28 Days Later. Macdonald is also the producer of The Beach, Beautiful Creatures, Twin Town and A Life Less Ordinary, so the session will be wide-ranging.
28 Days Later is also Club Film’s first venture into the horror genre. Directed by Danny Boyle, of Trainspotting and The Beach fame, this remarkable zombie horror movie was a hit in 2003 in both the USA and the UK. To hear more from Macdonald about the film and its making, come along to the Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye on Sunday 14 March at 8pm.
In complete contrast, Club Film screens the Oscar-winning Italian film Bicycle Thieves, on Friday 12 March. Made in 1947, this simple, beautiful film, set in post-war Rome, tells of a man's precious bicycle that is stolen. It is vital to his employment and ability to feed his family, so he sets off with his son to search for it, enduring set-backs and hardships. Although not produced as a children's film, the inclusion of a young boy in the story-line makes it suitable for older primary children and upwards. The film starts at 7pm and children are offered free entry when accompanied by a parent.
