Gaelic Superstar in Concert
Gaelic Superstar in Concert
11 May 2004

The Inverness & District branch of the TMSA are delighted to be presenting another concert on Friday 4th June at the Waterside Hotel, Inverness, featuring more of the very best in Scottish music and song -  Gaelic superstar Arthur Cormack , renowned traditional singer Doris Rougvie , and Danny award winners The Tassle Bandits.

From Skye, Arthur Cormack is one of the finest Gaelic singers of his generation. He began singing in local competitions at the age of 8 and eventually went on to win the Mod Gold Medal in 1992. Since then he has recorded several solo albums, and sung world-wide with fellow Skye musician Blair Douglas and with the highly-acclaimed MacTalla. Arthur is also a member of Gaelic dream team Cliar, whose 2nd album, "Gun Tamh” (Restless), won the Best Album award at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2003. He runs the Macmeanmna record label, on which the Cliar album is released, The Aros Experience (a tourist centre, theatre and restaurant in Portree), and is the director of Fèisean nan Gàidheal.  Small wonder then he is known as the busiest man on Skye!

Doris Rougvie is another TMSA favourite and will be fresh from this years Orkney Folk Festival where, amongst other things, she will be hosting both Festival clubs and the singers’ session. From Perth originally, Doris is a welcome guest at festivals and folk clubs around Scotland and abroad and has also published a book of Perthshire memories, poems and stories with folklorist Margaret Bennett. She sings solo and with several groups, one of which, The Keekin Gless, features Ewan Sutherland who appeared at the branch’s Auld New Years Ceilidh this year. Doris is also one of the organizers of the Glenfarg Folk Club and the Glenfarg Folk Weekend,  which is an annual ‘must’ in the diaries of many.

Continuing in the branch’s aims of promoting young local artists, the evening’s line-up is completed by a young Highland band, The Tassle Bandits (Ewan Henderson, 17 - fiddle, bagpipes, small pipes; Matheu Watson, 13 - fiddle whistles, banjo and mandolin; Colin Gordon, 17 - guitar and bazouki; Alex Urqhuart-Taylor, 18 - bagpipes, small pipes, border pipes and whistles)  Formed in 2003 with  the aim of entering the open stage competition held in memory of Danny Kyle at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections in January each year, they proved their excellence by scooping a Danny award and are now planning to record a CD next year.  Alex  Urquhart-Taylor won’t be joining them this time however due to sitting exams.

All in all, another fine night to be getting you out to!
