What’s the Future for the Visual Arts in Shetland?
24 September 2004

As part of the current exhibition by Veer North at the Scalloway Woollen Mill the visual artists’ group have organized a ‘Question Time’ this coming Wednesday 29th September at 7.30pm.

Chaired by the Rev. Martin Oxley this event gives an invited panel and members of the public the opportunity to discuss some of the issues facing the visual arts in Shetland.  While an increasing number of people attend arts events there are also a increasing number who feel that visual art, in particular, has gone off the rails and is irrelevant. Are artists helping to develop visual art or are they turning people away? Is painting a dead art? Do we need art anyway and if so how should it be provided and how much should we pay?  Why do people flock to Bonhoga for Open exhibitions but give other shows a wide berth? And the eternal chestnut…what ever happened to an Arts Centre for Shetland? These questions and many more may well come up but better still, come along and put your own question! The panel will include those from the arts as well as other interested parties.

Come and air your views in this unique opportunity as well as visiting the show. The Veer North  ‘Veers West’ exhibition continues this weekend at the Scalloway Woollen Mill both Saturday and Sunday and 2nd /3rd October from 12 noon until 6pm.
