Veer North Veers West
17 September 2004

Veer North, the Shetland visual artists’ group, have a new exhibition opening this weekend (18 & 19 September) and it should prove to be quite different to the usual art exhibitions seen in the Islands. For this show the group have gone to Scalloway and to the old Woollen Mill next to the Castle. This alternative venue is seen as an exciting opportunity to showcase the work of the group members, now totaling twenty-four, and comprising some of the most popular and innovative visual artists in Shetland.  Over three consecutive weekends beginning Saturday 18th September the large space will host a show of mostly new work some specifically created for the new venue.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a number of events aimed at raising the profile of the visual arts. On Tuesday 21st September at 7.30pm there will be an opportunity to meet the participating artists and find out about themselves and their work. There should be a few surprises as well.  A fund-raising ‘Silent Auction’ of work by contributing artists is also to be run throughout the time of the show. For this you can put closed bids which will be opened at the end of the exhibition.

Veer North will also use this show to launch their web site which will focus on the members and their work. You’ll be able to catch up with that new venture after the launch by going to www.veernorth.org.uk. Watch this space for news of further event as part of the exhibition which will open up a debate on the state of the visual arts in Shetland. The Veer North ‘Veers West’ exhibition is open at the Scalloway Woollen Mill on the weekends of 18th/19th and 25th/26th September and 2nd/3rd October from 12noon until 6pm.
