The Sonic Postcards education project will unveil a new installation of work at Hamnavoe Primary School in Orkney on 10 December.
Funded by NESTA, and run by national sound and technology organisation Sonic Arts Network, Sonic Postcards is an innovative education project based in Primary, Secondary and Special schools right across the UK. The project explores and compares the local sound environments of young people between the ages of 9-14 who live in contrasting regions and locations. As with an ordinary picture postcard, Sonic Postcards features snapshots of sound instead of pictures to describe this unique location.
Over the past two months children and staff from Hamnavoe have been working with artists to produce a very special record of their local soundscape in a project that combines listening skills, environmental education and the use of digital technology in a creative way.
Head Teacher, Mr Hannah says, "The project has been hugely successful and has opened up a whole new area of digital recording technology for the children. The project is very flexible as not only have we been able to link in with the theme of the sea and sea travelers which the children are currently learning, but we have also been able to link with our international Comenius project and with our partner schools in Germany and Italy, which is very exciting for us.
