Are you part of a group or organisation that wants to mark the 60th anniversary of the events that led to the end of the Second World War? Do you want to run a project that helps younger generations understand how life changed during the War? Would you like some money to help you make your project idea a reality?
Two National Lottery distributors have joined forces to support projects that commemorate the remarkable events of the Second World War, and to make sure that new generations can learn from these experiences. Big Lottery Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund are making grants of up to £20,000 through Home Front Recall.
This is a grants programme that is open to ALL members of your community.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for community projects that look back at a significant event, experience or change that took place in the UK during the Second World War. Your project might commemorate the role of Armed Forces veterans who served overseas during the war. Just as
important, it could be to commemorate the role and experiences of those who never left the UK or did not serve in the Armed Forces, such as: RAF Ground crew, shore-based Navy staff, evacuees, the Land Army, WRVS, or the Bevin Boys.
Your application could focus on the social and cultural changes or the experiences of particular groups of people who lived through the war. For example, the changing role of women, new fashions and the effect of rationing on clothes, the impact of food rationing and ‘Dig for Victory’ or a celebration of the new forms of music and dance from the War.
These are just a few ideas, you may have many more and we welcome innovative and creative community projects.
Your project might be based around recording the experiences of those who lived through the War; it might be a special community day; it could be a play or piece of creative artwork; perhaps it will be a reunion or an exhibition; or may be a practical re-construction. We are
particularly looking for projects that bring the past to life for a whole new generation, ensuring that the lessons to come out of that challenging time continue with us into the future.
Who can apply?
Any not-for-profit organisation can apply. This includes clubs, societies, schools and local authorities. You don’t have to be a formally established group – if you’re part of an informal group of people, we can give you up to £1,000 for your project.
We cannot make grants to individuals, or profit making organisations.
What should a group do next?
