One of the UK’s leading music festivals has announced its full programme for 2005 that will see artists from Ireland, Spain and Australia appearing alongside top Scottish acts.
The Hebridean Celtic Festival, based in Stornoway, 13th-16th July will witness the musical talents of Spain’s Xosé Manuel Budiño from Galicia; Scotland’s Peatbog Faeries; and Australia’s Mark Saul, the support artists to Van Morrison, Runrig and Shooglenifty respectively in the marquee, during the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
The international mix of the music on offer reflects the global appeal of the festival which attracted visitors from over 40 countries to last year’s event. That record figure is expected to be broken again this year with interest at an all-time high due to the quality of acts on show and the festival celebrating its tenth anniversary.
Van Morrison will also be supported by a special commission for festival 2005, Blas, featuring Mary Smith, Anna Murray, Alyth McCormack, Kathleen MacInnes and Fiona Mackenzie, a homegrown group of multi talented Gaelic singers.
Opening night of the festival on Wednesday 13th will feature Seamus Begley, the Irish singer, accordionist and storyteller who is best known for his work with the famous Australian guitarist Steve Cooney. Joining him on the bill will be James Graham, BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of 2004. And venues around Lewis and Harris will play host to many events featuring the main artists alongside local talent.
Festival Director Caroline MacLennan said: “We couldn’t be more pleased about the range of artists and the international flavour of the music which this year’s festival will provide. We believe the line-up we’ve attracted will ensure we can really celebrate our tenth anniversary.
“We can’t emphasise enough that we have the music, the setting and a supportive community. We continue to draw great strength from the backing of our sponsors, supporters and most importantly, those who attend the festival.”
