Fiddlers of the Heather Isles
Fiddlers of the Heather Isles
08 July 2005

Taransay reels again as up to fifty fiddlers take up residence. The annual traditional fiddle music school on the castaway island of Taransay, Outer Hebrides will take place from 18 to 22 July 2005.

The Hebridean Island which was home to BBC television's Castaway 2000 is being invaded again for the fourth time by folk from much nearer home.

From July 18th-22nd Taransay will be home to fiddlers from Lewis and Harris - Fidhleirean Eilean an Fhraoich - who will host a week of top class fiddle tuition in what is developing into one of the top fiddle schools in the country.

Leading the tutors will be Allan Henderson of Blazin' Fiddles, Alasdair Whyte of Battlefield Band,,Charlie Mackerron of Caperceille and former Fiddle Champion, Patsy Reid from Perthshire.Andy Thorburn will be assisting on keyboards.

The beautiful island will resound once again to driving strathspeys and reels and students will enjoy the modernised accommodation left behind by the Castaways.

Fiddlers of all ages from the Hebrides will be joined by students from Scotland, England and Ireland and as far afield as Australia.

When they're not playing fiddle and ceilidhing the nights away, the participants will have opportunities to learn Gaelic singing, play shinty and golf on the machair; explore the island; and learn its history from Harris based genealogist Bill Lawson.

To finish off the week, the whole group will lead a Friday night public ceilidh/dance in Tarbert Village Hall the 22nd July back on mainland Harris where more fun will be had to the wee sma hours. Visit www.musicscotland.com/fiddlers for more information.
