One of the most prestigious solo piping events in the world is coming to the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort this September. Taking place over two days (7th and 8th) the contest will see a ‘battle royal’ between two piping legends, William McCallum and Roderick J MacLeod, in the former winners’ category.
The event promises to be great entertainment, even for those who are unfamiliar with the piping scene. Over the two days almost 150 pipers will compete in various categories with prizes for Piobaireachd, Marches and Strathspey & Reel music.
Alison Harbison, piping secretary who is organising the meet said:
“The Northern Piping Competition always attracts the best from around the world and this year is no different. With at least nine countries represented including an entrant from Denmark this is an event with international appeal.
“A highlight of the meeting is always the past winners competition. This year we have a real treat for the audience with William McCallum and Roderick J MacLeod- Both are previous winners of the event and both are coming back with the express intention of winning once again, so we are expecting a superb standard of competition.
“The friendly rivalry is what the event is all about. Many of the pipers know each other and compete regularly. The atmosphere can be very tense at times but the overall event is relaxed, family entertainment, especially with sixty juniors competing. Everyone will be in their full regalia which is really a sight to see and the participants will be more than happy to share their knowledge and answer any questions.”
Organisers are expecting an 800 strong crowd for the event which is taking place in several of the conference rooms, including the huge Osprey Arena, at the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort.
