Launch of website for northern visual artists
09 September 2005

A new website devoted to the most northerly group of visual artists in the UK is to be launched next week and will also herald the start of an new exhibition. Veer North are using the exhibition at Hoswick Visitors Centre in the South Mainland of Shetland to advertise their website as part of their development as Shetland’s artists’ group.

Established in 2003, Veer North now have over twenty members and have organised a number of exhibitions as well as talks and seminars. The website is seen as an important tool in the circulation of information about the group and its activities, particularly outside Shetland. The site will be of benefit to all members and promote Shetland-based artwork to a wider audience.

A presentation of the draft Veer North website was well received at the recent Visual Arts Conference in Perth and will play a crucial role in networking between similar artist groups worldwide. Funding for the project was made possible through the assistance of Shetland Islands Council’s Development Department and Shetland Arts Trust. As well as information about the group and contact details, the website has separate pages devoted to the individual artists and their work.

The art exhibition at Hoswick’s newly refurbished Visitors Centre will showcase the work of many of the Veer North artists and range from paintings and drawings to sculpture and ceramics. It opens from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays and runs from Wednesday 14th to 30th September. During the exhibition there will be the opportunity to bid for small works by Veer North artists in a silent auction. Successful bidders will be notified at the end of the exhibition. You can find the website from 14th September at www.veernorth.org.uk
