20 February 2006

Perth Theatre presents the Scottish premiere of Christopher Hampton’s Tales From Hollywood from Thursday 23 February to Saturday 11 March 2006.

Hampton is most famous for his Oscar winning screenplay, Dangerous Liaisons starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. Tales From Hollywood has been described as Hampton’s finest play and won many awards (Including best comedy) when it was premiered at the National Theatre in 1983.

This wonderfully witty and surreal play is set in the glamorous world of 1940s Hollywood with real characters such as The Marx Brothers, Greta Garbo and Tarzan (Johnny Weismuller). It also features the émigré writers such as Bertolt Brecht and Henrich Mann who fled to Hollywood during Hitler’s reign during the Second World War. Hollywood in the ‘40s became a haven for writers fleeing the war in Europe.

In this dream-like play, our guide to Tinseltown is Ödön von Horváth; an Austrian playwright who was killed during a storm in Paris when the branch of the tree he was sheltering under fell on him. In this alternative reality, von Horváth lives and makes it to Hollywood where he soon learns that "a writer's importance to the cinema is on a par with the hairdresser!” Von Horvath played by Liam Brennan takes on the role of narrator in this play.

Tales From Hollywood is built around a series of interlocking tensions between the tragic innocence of America and the guilty awareness of the Europeans. The play is a witty take on the culture clash between Hollywood’s jet set and the European writers in Hollywood.

Cast includes: Amanda Beveridge, Liam Brennan, Peter D’Souza, Joe Gallagher, Lisa Gardner, Sarah Lawrie, Helen Logan, Justin Flagg, Sandy Neilson, Simon Roberts and Ann Scott Jones.

Tales from Hollywood is showing at Perth Theatre from Thu 23 Feb – Sat 11 Mar. 7.45pm + 2.30pm Sat matinees. Tickets £9.50 - £15.50 + concessions. Kids Go Free Tue-Thu at the theatre. For tickets call 0845 612 6319 or log onto www.horsecross.co.uk
