22 February 2006
Rehearsals are going well for this year's Garrick Singers Show, "Orpheus in the Underworld" by Jacques Offenbach, which runs from 22nd to 25th of March 2006 at 7.30pm in the Duthac Centre, Tain.
A lively tale of gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus and mortals down below on earth, in the words of one of the songs from the show, "What happens when the two combine?" is very much the theme.
Neglected wife, Eurydice, falls for a young man who she believes is a simple shepherd boy. He is really King Pluto of Hades in disguise, and when he whisks her off to his realm down below her dull and boring husband, Orpheus, is really quite pleased. However his formidable mother is far from happy and demands that Eurydice be found and brought back. Orpheus bids a sad farewell to his violin pupils and flies by balloon to Mount Olympus to seek the help of the gods in getting his wife back
Normally the gods and goddesses would not bother with such goings on, but when Jupiter, King of the gods, discovers that Eurydice is very attractive, he wants her for himself and takes his whole family with him on a holiday to Hades so that he can get a closer look.
Pluto throws a party for all his guests, and the evenings entertainment comes in the form of high kicking can can dancers.
Orpheus reluctantly asks for his wife back, and Jupiter agrees, on one condition. Orpheus may lead Eurydice out of Hades, but he must not look back at his wife or he will loose her forever. Orpheus is doing really well until Jupiter tricks him. However, Eurydice has a trick of her own!
The role of Eurydice is played by Sharon Macleod, who last year shone as the leading lady in "The Merry Widow" and her rather boring husband, Orpheus, is played by Ian Mackenzie, another star of previous productions. Orpheus' mother is played with great spirit and authority by Elspeth Sim, another long time member of the cast.
Pluto, King of Hades, is played with devilish wickedness by Derek Brown, in real life a Church of Scotland Chaplain, taking on his first major role with the company.
The role of philandering King of the gods, Jupiter, is taken by local Solicitor, Lawson Keir, and his long suffering wife, Juno, played by Catherine Williams.
There is as always a full compliment of supporting roles and chorus to bring the whole production to life.
Once again the first class teamwork of Trish Geddes as Producer and Lydia Jackson as Musical Director, has ensured a fun filled production, full of musicallity, wit and colour.
The show runs from 22nd to 25th of March at 7.30pm in the Duthac Centre, Tain. Tickets go on sale soon at the Tower Bookshop, Tain, priced at £7 per adult and £4 per schoolchild. Tickets can also be bought from any cast member. Block bookings of 10 or more receive a discount of £1 per ticket on Wednesday and Thursday evenings only.
