New York artist to show photographic exhibition at An Tobar
22 February 2006

Moonlight - photographs by New York artist Barbara Yoshida will be on show at Gallery II, An Tobar – The Tobermory Arts Centre on Isle of Mull from 1st – 31st March 2006.

New York photographer Barbara Yoshida’s photographic exhibition Moonlight opens the 2006 season in Gallery II at An Tobar on 1st March. Since 1991, Yoshida has been focusing on a series of moonlight images, using moonlight as the only light source, drawing on its intriguing and mysterious qualities and historical and artistic reference.

Barbara Yoshida describes the quality of moonlight as special and something that “deserves to be appreciated in its purest form, so I work far away from any artificial light sources. Photographing at night, with stones or rocks against the night sky, emphasizes their shapes as well as the relationship between “figure and ground,” between the focal object and its surroundings. The “star trails” add the element of time. They are a visual record of how much the earth has moved during the exposure, which can be 8 minutes or more than an hour.”

The exhibition runs concurrently with work on show in Taigh Chearsabhagh on North Uist from 4th March – 29th April and also compliments the exhibition Long Night Moon – the Rhythm of Remembrance in Gallery I, An Tobar. Long Night Moon is an exhibition of recent mixed media work by Iona artist Mhairi Killin exploring the process of time on healing grief and the ascension of the spirit after death. The title piece, Long Night Moon is a collection of images created using paper, brass and stitched silver, charting the celestial path of the moon in 2006 and marking the whole and oneness of a year complete and another remembrance passed.

Moonlight is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm and runs until 31st March 2006. Long Night Moon is open until 22nd April, touring to Patriothall Gallery, WASPS Studio in Edinburgh 6th – 17th May 2006. www.antobar.co.uk
