Charity concert features Perth’s hot bands
Charity concert features Perth’s hot bands
08 March 2006

On Thursday 16 March, some of the city’s best bands will descend on the new concert hall for an unforgettable night of great music as well as raise funds for a new English Language Centre in Sri Lanka.

The idea for the concert came about when two Scottish community workers, June from Perth and Caroline from Paisley, took a career break to work in a school in Sri Lanka. However, when the Tsunami hit on Boxing Day 2004, the school, as well as much of the country was devastated and destroyed by the wave. The students then decided to set up the charity Friends of the Western Province to help alleviate the suffering and help re-build the community.

The money raised from next Thursday’s concert will go towards the English Language Centre in the Wadduwa district and will provide language teaching for children, young people and adults.

Bands playing on the evening include Breschnev, (performed at T in the Park and supported Mull Historical Society); Luxury Car (recorded an exclusive track session for Radio 1); Michael Rattray Allstars (supported Belle and Sebastian in Perth) and singer-songwriter Fraser Anderson (performed at the critically acclaimed Pearls of the Tay launch at Perth Concert Hall in September last year).

“The night will be fantastic opportunity for the people of Perth and further afield to experience the fabulous local talent we have right on our doorstep,” says Andy Shearer, Creative Director (Music) at Perth Concert Hall. “The beauty of this concert is that, as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable night out, the audience is also aware that they are helping a community thousands of miles away. It’s definitely a night not to be missed.”

Tsunami Appeal Concert, Thursday 16 March at 8pm. Tickets adults £6 and under 18s £5. To book call 0845 612 6319 or log onto www.horsecross.co.uk
