Watch This Space with Show Scotland
Watch This Space with Show Scotland
28 April 2006

Watch this Space is a new collection of paintings by Edinburgh artist Gerry McGowan, showing at An Tobar on the Isle of Mull. This exhibition is part of a new exchange initiative between An Tobar and Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh.

Gerry McGowan’s paintings are figurative in nature with a focus on social behaviour and activity. The artist is a keen observer of people at shopping centres, on the streets, and at weddings – in fact wherever people gather. His paintings show the paraphernalia of current times – baseball caps, plastic bags, mobile phones, I-pods, recording how people conduct their daily lives and fill their leisure time. His works are hung in a deliberately random fashion to reflect the random nature of the activity of the subjects.

Gerry has created a new series of paintings especially for this exhibition based on observations of people on a recent journey from Glenuig to Tobermory via the Kilhoan Ferry. Gerry has been a frequent visitor to Glenuig for many years and draws on the imagery at Glen Uig Beach in a series of paintings, which is included in this collection.

Gerry McGowan trained at Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and the USA.
