Mad Mix at the North Star for Johnsmas
08 June 2006

While the Johnsmas Foy gathers pace on Victoria Pier on Friday 23rd June 2006, the North Star will also be gearing up for one of the best and most eclectic music nights of its year, when top Scottish indie act ‘The Hazey Janes’ will be on a bill that includes Roddy Woomble (Idlewild) fronting his new acoustic band and Mark Radcliffe’s band ‘The Family Mahone’, a name that just about says it all. If you thought the ‘Pogues were mad…….!!!!

The gig is being promoted by newly formed arts development agency ‘Shetland Arts’ as part of the Johnsmas Foy in conjunction with the North Star.

The Hazey Janes were formed in Dundee in 1999 and their music has been described as “a rich and original fusion of country rock and American power pop”. They have supported such bands as Snow Patrol and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynchi and appeared at festivals such as T in the Park and Glasgow’s Hogmany Celebrations. Their most recent album ‘Hotel Radio’ gained much critical acclaim from a number of international music magazines.

Roddy Woomble last played the North Star when ‘Idlewild’ performed there as part of a collaboration between Shetland Arts Trust and BBC Radio 1’s Steve Lamacq show. Here he returns with his new acoustic band that also features demon fiddle legend John McCusker. Shetland will be their first live appearance so it promises to be a unique event in its own right.

Mark Radcliffe, late of Radio 1, now of Radio 2 fame, will also be on the bill with his far from legendary band ‘The Family Mahone’ who are described as “playing not only Irish drinking songs, but also English drinking songs and Scottish drinking songs – in fact a whole range of musical idioms from a whole range of musical idiots” Dare you miss it!!!!

Tickets will be £10 on the door on the night and this should be one of those gigs where you will be able to claim “I was there” to your friends who weren’t.
