Jeff Healey Band to play only Scottish gig at Perth Concert Hall
Jeff Healey Band to play only Scottish gig at Perth Concert Hall
24 July 2006

Jeff Healey Band, one of the world’s most celebrated blues-rock acts, will play an exclusive Scottish gig at Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 6 August 2006 – one of only three UK dates.

The band consisting of Jeff on vocals and guitar, Joe Rockman on bass and Tom Stephen on drums, have had tremendous success on both sides of the pond over their 18 year career. They have toured or shared a stage with legends such as ZZ Top, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Bon Jovi to name a few. Their albums See the Light and Hell to Pay have topped the Billboard and Canadian charts, with the latter successfully selling millions worldwide.

Later albums Feel This, Cover to Cover and Get Me Some continued to ensure they stayed at the top of their game as one of the most exciting blues-rock outfits around.

Their amazing story began when Canadian frontman Jeff Healey, blind from eye cancer at the age of one, picked up his first guitar at three years of age. By playing the guitar while sitting down, with it flat on his lap, he patented a revolutionary technique, hitting notes beyond the reach of other guitar players and now a strong trademark of his performance.

Recognised as a musical prodigy by his mid-teens, it wasn’t long until he came to the attention of “the master of the Telecaster” Albert Collins, whom Healey went on to perform with at Toronto’s Albert’s Hall, and later performed with B.B King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

“Not only did I get the chance to play with these great international musicians but I also had the opportunity to jam with the local celebrities in Toronto, people like the Walsh Brothers, David Wilcox, Kim Mitchell and the like. It was a great learning experience,” says Healey.

It was while doing Sunday night jam sessions at Grossman's Tavern in Toronto that Healey hooked up with drummer Tom Stephen and bassist Joe Rockman to form the Jeff Healey Band.

Their first album, See the Light, with singles Confidence Man and Angel Eyes topped the charts, but Hell To Pay catapulted them to an all new level. The album was a star-studded project featuring Mark Knopfler, Paul Shaffer, Bobby Whitlock and George Harrison.

The band was also nominated for a two Grammy Awards and performed on the soundtrack for the Patrick Swayze movie Road House.

Although still touring and performing with the band, Jeff has also latterly pursued his love of vintage jazz. He taught himself jazz trumpet and opened up his own music club in Toronto named Healey’s. Here is where he plays with his rock band and his own jazz group, Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards, he’s has also got his own jazz radio show in Canada.

People who are passionate about blues-rock will not want to miss this only Scottish gig.
