An exhibition of ‘New Faces’ will open at Perth Museum and Art Gallery on the 16 December 2006. This is an opportunity to see works of art that have been added to the collections in the last year, most of which are gifts and bequests from individuals.
The display includes three paintings by Charles Gray Kennaway (1860-1925) that have been generously gifted by a private donor. They include scenes of ‘Fishing Boats’ and a ‘Coastal Town in France’ as well as a rural scene of a ‘Cider Press’. They will be displayed alongside Jean Claude Nattes’ (1765-1839) sketch of ‘A Watermill near Dunkeld’ and Alexander Merrie Hardie’s (1910-1989) ‘Cromarty Theme’.
This year has seen the generous gifts of The Andrew Rolla Bequest to the Fergusson Gallery and the Neil Dallas Brown Trust to Perth Museum & Art Gallery. A number of paintings by the Italian-Scot, Andrew Rolla (1926-2004), who was a pupil of both Fergusson and his partner Margaret Morris, explore themes such as movement, colour and nature. These are combined with Rolla’s vivid use of colour, highly stylised and sinuous command of various media. Whereas Rolla’s display is a feast for the eye, the work of Neil Dallas Brown (1938-2003) is a feast for the imagination. His figurative work is represented by a drawing and his later abstract work by a shaped painting inspired by the sea.
Purchases for the collections are made possible through funding by the local authority and this is generally topped up with grant aid from national bodies such as the National Fund for Acquisitions. Perth and Kinross Council expresses thanks to all those who have enabled a wider audience to enjoy their artworks and acknowledges the vital support received.
The exhibition will be on show at Perth Museum & Art Gallery from 16 December 2006 until 5 May 2007. Opening hours 10am to 5pm. Admission free. Please note that the museum will be closed from 24 December to 2 January inclusive over the festive season.
