Lillian Hellman’s1939 play, The Little Foxes, made famous by the 1940s film of the same name starring Bette Davis begins at Perth Theatre on Thursday 1 February 2007.
Based in America’s Deep South at the turn of the 19th Century, this is said to be one of the best and most important plays ever written. It was last brought to life on the Perth Theatre stage back in 1971 starring Liza Goddard and in the 2007 version we’re delighted to have esteemed theatre actress Irene Macdougall in the lead role.
The focus of the play is the Hubbard family - cold hearted but admiringly charming Regina, her scheming brothers Ben and Oscar, her poor ailing husband Horace and her naïve daughter Alexandra.
Plans to build a cotton mill on their land signal a chance for greater wealth. The sibling rivalry that ensues shows human nature at its worst as the family plot against each other and try to outwit the other in their frenzied fortune hunting.
It reveals just how far people are willing to go to get what they want, irrespective of the drastic consequences.
This play also boasts a superb cast including Irene Macdougall (long-standing Dundee Rep Ensemble member) and River City’s Deirdre Davis (also Orphans & The Magdalene Sisters) will take to the stage for the first time in five years to play Regina’s nervous and timid sister Birdie.
Other cast includes Lynette Clarke as Addie; Ewan Donald as Leo; Mark McDonnell as William Marshall; Neil McKinven as Ben; Greg Powrie as Oscar; Lucia Rovardi as Alexandra; Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Cal and Moray Treadwell as Horace Giddens.
The costume of the era is designed by Monika Nisbet and set designed by Rebecca Minto.
The Little Foxes is at Perth Theatre from Thursday 1 to Saturday 17 February, 7.45pm and 2.30pm (Sat matinees). Tickets £8 - £16. To book call 0845 612 6319 or log onto www.horsecross.co.uk
