New York’s Bang on A Can All-Stars bring their incredible music to Perth in 2007
22 January 2007

If you like to take a walk on the wild side, don’t miss, the legendary New York ensemble, Bang on a Can All-Stars appearing in Perth for their only Scottish date on Saturday 3 February 2007.

Formed in 1993, Bang on a Can All-Stars bring as much exciting new music from the Big Apple as anyone could want, including new works by Philip Glass, and astounding tours de force by composers like Steve Reich, David Lang, Louise Andriessen and even films by Doug Aitken, Ernie Kovacs plus much more. Whether these names are familiar or unfamiliar do not miss this chance to hear one of the world's great ensembles in action.

The instrumentation of the Bang on a Can All Stars is simply unique using clarinets, saxophones, electric guitar, cello, bass, keyboards and percussion, a mix of instruments that doesn't seem to fit in any recognisable category. Part classical ensemble, part rock band, part jazz band, it has a flexibility that represents the vision and originality of this one-off, not to be missed day.

Constructed specifically to blur the lines between classical and pop ensembles, the line up was chosen to give voice to a range of music and styles, and the players have the musical backgrounds and abilities to match.

Each player is completely at home with new music but has also worked elsewhere, such as collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, backing Mikhail Baryshnikov, touring with Paul Simon and Bob Dylan to name but a few. The players bring their otherworldly experiences back to their life with the All-Stars, and their mixing creates an intense, hard-rocking approach to performance that no other group can match.

Bang on a Can All-Stars’ mission is to give the most persuasive and exciting performances of the most genre-defying music in the world. They do this in many ways, by performing and recording definitive versions of the groundbreaking music of our day, by working closely with a diverse assortment of musical masters from our and other cultures, and by commissioning actively new works from both the unknown and the famous, from all walks of musical life.

Together, the All-Stars have worked in close collaborations with some of the most important musicians of our time, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, Brian Eno, Ornette Coleman, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore to name but a few.

The All-Stars are one of the most active touring contemporary ensembles, on the road for much of the year and perfomed in such venues like: Venice Biennale, the Holland Festival, The Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Sydney Olympics, UCLA’s Royce Hall, London’s Barbican Center, and Paris’s Theatre De La Ville, as well as appearing as regulars at numerous festivals in Italy, Scandinavia and throughout Eastern Europe.

The Bang on a Can All-Stars, with their unparalleled musicality, their international touring, award-winning cds and far ranging commissioning programmes, have become one of the most powerful ambassadors for contemporary music in the world.

In the 21st century, the All-Stars continue their ambassadorship, bringing their brand of beauty to concert halls across the world.

Bang on a Can All-Stars comprises of musicians:Robert Black (Bass), David Cossin (Drums and Percussion), Lisa Moore (Piano and Keyboards), Mark Stewart (Guitars), Wendy Sutter (Cello) and Evan Ziporyn (Clarinets).
