Getting There: Future Access to Special Places - Tourism Society conference
16 April 2007

To mark its 30th Anniversary, The Tourism Society has teamed up with the University Highlands & Islands Millennium Institute to hold its Annual Conference in the Highlands of Scotland. The event will be held at the Aviemore Highlands Resort on 16th to 18th May 2007.

The subject of the conference will be the relationship between tourism and heritage in a fast-changing world. Visitors are attracted to the natural and historical heritage of regions like the Highlands of Scotland, where heritage is an important part of their tourism offering. Yet increasingly the need for physical access by tourists will have to be balanced against issues of environmental and cultural sensitivity and changing land use.

Key speakers include Peter Lederer, Chairman of VisitScotland; William Roe, Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise; David Green, Convener of the Cairngorms National Park Authority; Professor Sandy Pentland, Media Lab, MIT and Professor Stephen Tinsley from the Sustainable Development Research Centre, UHI.

The conference dinner will be held on Thursday 17th May in the highest restaurant in the UK, at 3,500 feet up the Cairngorm Mountain accessible only by funicular railway! The conference will also include study visits to Rothiemurchus Estate, the Highland Folk Museum, Culloden Battlefield, Glenmore Visitor Centre and Loch Garten Osprey Centre.

Bookings can be made through Flo Powell at the Tourism Society or via the website on www.tourismsociety.org or by downloading the programme and booking form below. Discounted packages are available for the full three days as well as concessions for students and retired.
