One of Scotland’s most contemporary and innovative art galleries, the Watermill Gallery in Aberfeldy, will be holding a solo exhibition by Fife artist Lesley Kamel, from 26 May – 15 July 2007.
Currently completing her Masters in Fina Art, Kamel’s work focuses on her connection and appreciation of the natural environment, and her awareness of environmental issues which affect the appearance of Scottish landscapes.
“These paintings represent a shift in my thinking. Rather than trying to reproduce my emotional response to the landscape in the work, I am becoming more interested in presenting a contemporary landscape which has been, often adversely, affected by technology.” Said Kamel.
Watermill owners Kevin and Jayne Ramage were so impressed with Kamel’s degree show, they decided to purchase one of her pieces and invited her to exhibit her work at the popular gallery.
Jayne said: “Of the 2006 Duncan of Jordanstone summer show, Kamel’s work stood out. There is a maturity and edge to her art which invites the viewer to ask questions about the environment we observe and our impact on it.”
The Watermill gallery will also be hosting an exhibition at the Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh, from 15 June – 23 June. The eight-day exhibition will bring together a series of modern prints from world-renowned artists such as Damien Hirst, Patrick Heron, Barbara Hepworth, William Scott and Henri Matisse.
The Watermill opened in May 2005 and is a major new gallery focusing on modern and contemporary abstract art that draws inspiration from landscapes and the elements. The Gallery, part of the Watermill complex which also houses the largest bookshop in rural Scotland, a coffee shop and music shop, has a full programme of exhibitions throughout 2007.
