True North: Teaching the music of the Highlands and Islands in Higher Education is a conference which aims to gain an understanding of the state of the Scottish music industry, in particular rock/pop, traditional and the fusions thereof, and its current and potential relationship to Higher Education providers in the region and the UK as a whole.
It will explore the particular nature, diversity, threats and opportunities presented to Scottish and, in particular, Highlands and Islands musicians in the 21st century.
With the rapid convergence of new media technologies, the potential of UHI as a new, fully networked university, 2007 Highland Year of Culture, and the publication of several recent reports on the Scottish Music Industry, this will be an unprecedented opportunity for indigenous practitioners and academics to share expertise, forge links and be instrumental in disseminating good practice.
The event will also offer an opportunity to discuss pedagogical issues of international interest and to network and make contacts with other academics and musicians.
