Dunstaffnage Music Festival
11 July 2007

The Dunstaffnage Music Festival (Oban) takes place on Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th of July 2007 and is one of Scotland’s most exciting independent festivals.

Dunstaffnage is programmed and run by passionate individuals who want to deliver a festival in Scotland's calendar of events that is more challenging and indeed the programme for 2007 has much more to offer than just music. An array of Art installations (both environmental and interactive), street performers, circus acts and puppet shows populate the site along with full locally sourced organic food concessions to suit all tastes and licensed bar facilities open till 1am.

This Festival is a true boutique festival with a history stretching back over 15 years. From humble beginnings in June 1992, the festival began simply as a birthday party ("Pikey's Party" named eponymous after its founder Pikey). However by 1997, with ever larger numbers joining the audiences, the party had outgrown its original setting, moving 200 yards to a beach location, developing and diversifying into a small festival with three stages of music. By this time the party had become an electronic based music tent, an acoustic stage and a main stage. All in all this amounted to more than 20 acts for the hundreds of people arriving from all over the country to what was becoming an established and free annual event.

As a result of this popularity, the festival moved again in 2006, this time a full 3 miles to its present site at Dunstaffnage Castle. Here it retains the intimate atmosphere for which it is so well known, with the stunning setting now an integral part of the party. The festival today remains very much true to the ethos of the original events with excellent bands and artists, a great mix of people of all ages and beautiful scenery.

With a capacity of 4000 per day and full camping facilities, the intimate atmosphere is fed by 4 stages from mid-day till 1am delivering a high quality blend of national and international talent encompassing both established and breaking artists and spanning a wide array of musical styles including indie, rock, reggae, folk, Celtic, electronic, funk, soul, jazz and dance.

Acts this year including emerging independents the 1990s, dance talents Union of Knives, folk legend Dick Gaughan, platinum selling festival legends The Levellers alongside djs from Kinky Afro, Mark Robb's "Regal Social" soul club to name but a few. Timorous Beasties are dressing the event with donated fabric, making cushions and curtains to elevate the environment to a level of ‘chi-chi’ not normally associated with larger festivals. While artists from the Chateau will take charge of the decoration of all three stages for band’s performances.

A light installation by will highlight trees and cliffs around the site throughout the event, in addition to a spectacular light show promised from a barge in the bay which will be viewable from the castle site at the end of the music performances on both nights.

The festival site is situated 2 hours from Glasgow then 1.5 miles outside the town of Oban and sits on the shore by Dunstaffnage Castle with beautiful views west to the islands of Lismore & Mull. This location provides a stunning destination at the end of a journey that will carry visitors through some of the highlands most dramatic landscapes. With a shuttle bus service to the town it offers easy access to all the usual amenities/travel links.

The small company set up to manage the party (Stonefield Events) even takes its name from the original location ‘Achnacloich‘, which is Gaelic for stone field.
