'Seedling', a new sculpture by artist Geoff Lucas, has been installed in Nethybridge.
The sculpture, made for the recently opened garden of Nethybridge Primary School, is in oak wood and approxiamately six feet high. It is comprised of three carved and painted elements; a beaker and straw with a peg clipped to the top of the straw. The particular arrangement of these objects also visually combine to suggest a sprouting seedling in a pot.
Workshops had been held with the children at the school exploring ideas of changed perceptions, where, through looking at similarities of forms, one familiar object is also seen as something different. The children began by seeing their own hands as different things; spiders, fish, birds, boats and planes etc. then working appropriately enough with recycled materials, they used everyday household objects to make all manner of new creations. Geoff had observed the children's use of the materials and greatly enjoyed seeing the various vehicles, buildings, landscapes and creatures come to life. He chose the final three objects, that had each been used in different ways in the workshops, and devised the sculpture as something that encapsulated the ideas behind the project, both through its arrangement of forms and thematically, the seedling changing from one thing to another, while also celebrating the garden site.
The project was made possible by funding from Highland 2007.
