Upgrade! Scotland, Hacklabs, Wednesday 30th April, Dundee Contemporary Arts, 5pm - 7pm

At this month's Upgrade! Scotland we will be trying something a little different. As a springboard to getting a media hack space going in Dundee, Magnus Lawrie a founding member of the Electron Club in Glasgow, will be speaking about all aspects of hack culture.

Beginning with a brief overview of the Free Software movement and it's significance for hackers, we will ask 'what makes a hacker?' and look at some instances where hackers have come together. Magnus will also outline his involvement in such groups and introduce his current research into hacking & knitting.

This will be followed by an open forum where what happens next is up to you. There will be computers available to try out some open source software and experience the Linux platform and a room full of people to discuss the possibilities of these tools for Tayside.

Please join us from 5pm for a glass of wine, with the talk and forum starting at 5.30pm.

Upgrade! Scotland is FREE but space is limited. Please RSVP via our Facebook group or email: kristina 'at' mediascot.org

Upgrade! Scotland, B-Sides Scottish premiere, Wednesday 28th May, CCA, Glasgow, 7-9pm

In 2006 New Media Scotland put out a challenge to artists working with video to make a short film using the other bits from their video archive: the off-cuts, bloopers, b-rolls and mistakes. This exciting collection of short films became known as the B-sides.

Since their premiere at Upgrade! International in Oklahoma our programme has toured to Boston, Belgrade, Vancouver, Paris and Melbourne and become the blueprint for other Upgrade! node's compliations.

We are now excited to announce the Scottish premiere of B-Sides at the CCA on Wednesday 28th May.

Come and join us at 6.30pm for a drink to celebrate the homecoming of this exciting project with the screening starting at 7pm sharp.

Upgrade! Scotland is FREE but space is limited. Please RSVP via our Facebook group or email kristina 'at' mediascot.org

Location One Announces Virtual Residency Program, Submissions Deadline: May 1, 2008, Dates of Residency: June 1-November 4, 2008

Location One presents its first ever "Virtual Residency Project" in the form of a call to artists and other creative individuals with the express purpose of fostering collaboration and creativity across geographical expanses and areas of expertise around the topic of the 2008 US Presidential Election.

The goal of this residency is to find 3 participants who are not necessarily physically proximate but who are willing to collaborate with other artists/engineers/scientists/writers/musicians/poets to develop a project using such non-F2F (face to face) interfaces such as webcams, email, chat, video, blogs, Second Life, MIDI, skype, walkie-talkie, snail mail, radio or POTS (plain old telephone service), tin cans on string, or any other means of collaboration to develop a project that will be presented at Location One in the fall of 2008, in advance of the US Presidential election.

Though we will consider international residents, the theme of this inaugural residency is the 2008 Presidential Election and the buildup around this pivotal political event. The theme can be interpreted as broadly or as literally as the participants would like, the project will be developed collaboratively by the 3 individuals chosen for this residency project.

Location One will provide an area on its website where the project can develop publically through blogging, video, audio or other means.

Please send CV, url or any materials to virtualresidency@location1.org by midnight May 1, 2008. Please include a few lines describing why you are interested in a collaborative virtual residency.
