DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTSeen what’s happening at The Spectrum Centre lately? In
addition to some long overdue cosmetic upgrades; the former drill hall (which
features a spectacular roof) is now home to the Spectrum Theatre. The curtain
went up in September 2003 at this superb facility, boasting state of the art
sound and lighting, a central location and affordable theatre access to touring
companies, comedians, music societies, schools, etc. The Spectrum Theatre offers
unbeatable marketing support, catering, and 150-seat audience capacity … and
yes, there is a bar for patrons. |

welcoming The Highland Festival and a variety of children’s theatre performances

| AJ: What famous names have
taken to the stage?
CF: Elvis.
Uh-huh-huh. |

| AJ: What are your big ideas for
the future of the venue? CF: In the coming months, we will be working to develop a varied programme of performances and aggressively marketing the theatre, to let people know that we are here! In many ways, our smaller Studio Theatre is very similar in size and style to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. I would like to create a venue with a regular following, which in a city means attracting good shows. |

| AJ: Does the venue have a
ghost?
CF: The exterior of the building is scary enough. AJ: What was your worst disaster as director? CF: A couple of monologue
artists…who outnumbered the audience. |

| AJ: And what was your biggest
triumph?
CF: When the Board of
Directors secured a private lease from The Highland Council, which has taken 7
years to achieve in principle. This is a milestone for the centre and its users
since the ‘Save Our Spectrum’ campaign began several years ago. The theatre was
introduced when the Board, chaired by Pat Hayden, realised there was scope for a
smaller arts facility in the town centre. |

AJ: If you could have any artist in the world for a
one-off special, who would it be, and why?
CF: Billy Connolly – nuff said. AJ: Why should people look forward to visiting your venue? CF: It’s new, it’s central, it’s affordable, it’s enjoyable, and it’s yours – in the centre of your city. © HI-Arts, 2004 |
