Òran ùr do Mhuile – A New Song for Mull
10 November 2008

This project has taken a lot of hard work over the past year and it certainly paid off. The audience were treated to a fantastic night of entertainment.

The 9 songs short listed for the final were performed by local singers Shannon MacLean, Kirsty MacKinnon and Alasdair Whyte accompanied by musicians Gillian Frame, Findlay Napier, Douglas Millar, Paul Jennings and Mary Ann Kennedy.

The winners were:
Category 2
1.Gheibhinn Cadal Math - Allan MacDonald, Edinburgh
2.An t-Eilean Alainn - Ian Thomson, Torloisk
3.Ghebhinn Cadal Math - Norma McDougall, West Kilbride.
Category 3
Sin Shaun mo bhrathair - Shannon MacLean, Tobermory
Category 4
1.A Mhuile nam Beann - Allan MacDonald, Edinburgh
2.Eilean Muile far an d’thug mi suain - Ceitidh Smith, Kyle of Lochalsh.
3.Dhachaidh do Mhuile - John Angus MacLeod, Largs/Norma McDougall, West Kilbride

The final was adjudicated by a panel of three, Anne Lorne Gillies, Eilidh MacKenzie and Malcolm Munro. Unfortunately Anne Lorne Gillies could not attend the final in person but in keeping with the innovation of the whole project a Skype link was set up and Anne watched the final from the comfort of her own home and she was able to discuss her choices with her fellow adjudicators before they reached their combined decision.

This project aimed to create a new legacy featuring traditional poems, contemporary music and new songs to showcase song writing talent from all over the country, with Mull as the inspiration. As many people were whistling or humming the songs as they left the hall, we hope that the songs will now be used by others to keep them alive!

While the judges were deliberating, the musicians will perform as Findlay Napier and The Bar Room Mountaineers, a band who have made their mark through their powerful live presence and the signature leftfield songwriting of Queen Anne’s Revenge – the alter ego of Findlay and his writing partner, Watercolour Music’s Nick Turner. Their debut album, Out All Night, distributed by Cadiz Music, has just been released.

Ailean Dòmhnallach, the 2008 Mens’ Traditional Medalist also performed a few songs for us to keep the audience entertained.

The CD of the final songs produced by Mary Ann Kennedy and Nick Turner at Watercolour Music is now available from the website www.mullmod.org.uk  or by contacting Janet MacDonald janet@macdonlad2351.freeserve.co.uk  01688 302351.
