MAJOR EXHIBITION WILL SHOWCASE THEATRE DESIGN TALENT

COLLABORATORS: UK DESIGN FOR PERFORMANCE 2003-2007

INVERNESS CITY GALLERY & MUSEUM 6 OCTOBER – 3 NOVEMBER 2007 (Free entry)

The very best of contemporary UK theatre design is heading to INVERNESS in a celebrated exhibition hot from the Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of Theatre Design where it was one of the most popular amongst displays by more than 50 countries.

Collaborators: UK Design for Performance 2003-2007 is the latest exhibition by the Society of British Theatre Designers (SBTD). This vibrant collection of 30 designers’ and architects’ work was selected from the vast national exhibition of the same name seen in Nottingham in January this year.

The exhibition illustrates why British theatre designers have such a worldwide reputation for their fresh and innovative ideas. Having used ‘time’, ‘space’ and ‘process’ as themes for previous exhibitions, the SBTD are turning their attention to collaboration as a vital constituent of design for performance. As well as showing how designers communicate their ideas to audiences, the theme celebrates their partnerships with directors, visual artists such as lighting and projection designers, digital artists, industrial designers and architects.

Designs include inventive site-specific performances to grand international ballet and opera in Verona and Stuttgart; RSC and National Theatre to small-scale touring productions. Francis O’Connor’s Anna Karenina for Edinburgh Lyceum will feature as will the redevelopment of the Eden Court Theatre.

After Inverness, Collaborators will combine with more work from the original Nottingham exhibition for a year long residency in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London from the 21 November.

Kate Burnett, Hon. Secretary to the SBTD and Collaborators Project Director said: “I am thrilled to be invited to bring such a wonderful range of visual treats to Inverness. We have some of the very best and most innovative UK design for performance in this exhibition, which will stimulate visitors’ imaginings of plays or stories they know, as well as introducing strange, delicate and intriguing ideas in stage models, drawings and photos. This is a rare and fabulous resource for students, teachers, children and anyone interested in the art, craft and design of performance”.
