Artist's Statement

After art college, John Cumming states he followed a path defined by ‘where my curiousity has led’ and thus includes many media; carving, ceramics, printmaking and drawing as well as the written word and music.   As well as sculpture, he has been involved with creating a CD of short stories from Shetland in dialect.  With the aid of a compressor, he recently returned to carving in stone.

I feel very sad at leaving the island and parting with so many new friends, but I have no doubt that the energy stimulated here will continue to feed new works and collaboratiopns in future. So many people to thank - Robert and Anthony for having the vision and the commitment to put it into practice - Bill and Jean who have anchored everything that has happened here - Nicky, Alex and Steve, and many others whom I probably haven't even met. The longer we are here the more the environment, and the interaction of the group stimulates new ideas- new possibilities.
