International Artists Workshop - Artist Misha Somerville (Scotland)

Artist's Statement

Misha Somerville works from a workshop by Loch Ness designing whistles, in between performing with Scottish Fusion Band Croft No. Five.

"My inspiration to make whistles has come from the opportunity to try new ideas. As with music itself, musical instruments have always evolved with the times …  I am positive the evolution will not stop here and excited to think what might come next."

Tuesday 12 June 2007

Well, having been shot out of a cultural canon, I sank to the bottom of the sea in a spell of uncreative thinking that lasted 3 long days and nights.  Then it arrived, back again.  Come away in out of the cold - have a seat next to the fire while i get you a hot drink and a whisky.  God man, it's good to see you.  You look like you've been round the world!  So tell me.  Where did you get to..........

Salsa dancing body sculpture wind powered sea transport whisky after the sun music any time film in the bothy records in picture and sound talk about anything anytime bob up and down a while snooze n you loose paddle close to the wind cut you finger distortion organ dreaming hungover mornings in the fresh air reverse park patricia in a cave shin bashing heather louping morning haze thought.

Gathering people from round the world for a two week brainstorming session with no clear aims comes as a breath of fresh air.  It's pretty difficult if not impossible to keep pumping creative output for the whole time.  But it becomes interesting  to see what  puts you in the right frame.  The absence of distractions present in other parts of your life gives you a blank canvas to observe your own thinking.
