| Crafts Makers in the Highlands |
| ,
Eileen Gatt | | The inspiration for my work comes from ancient Scottish traditions and customs. I am also influenced by Inuit Art, having spent some time in Alaska where I studied the Inuit Culture. I graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1997 and then returned home to the Scottish Highlands to establish my Jewellery and metalwork business. I was awarded a setting up grant from the Scottish Arts Council in 1999. I make one-off pieces to commission as well as batch produced collections which include jewellery, christening cups, bowls, pictures and perfume bottles etc. I sell through Fairs, galleries and retail outlets in the UK and abroad. My work is predominantly in silver but often incorporates 18ct gold detail to highlight certain aspects of the designs.

| The Bay Pottery,
Ms Maggie Zerafa | | My work comprises gas fired functional ceramic pieces for daily use that have been deeply influenced by a three year traditional apprenticeship in Japan. This time in Japan first sparked my interest in the concept of 'shibui'. In an artistic sense 'shibui' describes a sober, quiet understated quality, objects without superfluous adornment. My work reflects this by its simple decoration, unevenness of surface and honesty to the material and methods from which it is created. My glazes are in soft natural tones, some decorated with patterns and motifs drawn from nature.

Sporran-nation is the design practice of Jennifer Cantwell, who's background in painting and textiles is reflected in an emphasis on surface texture, colour and detail. All pieces are design focused with inspiration being sourced from the urban environment. Using a combination of new, recycled, vintage materials and found objects, tactile colourful pieces are formed that contain individuality, vibrancy and humour.

| ,
Mr Peter James Horner | | I love stones ! I love to make jewellery using them. In many cases my part is to do no more than quietly enhance them. I use both hand making and lost wax casting techniques this allows indefinite creativity as one can work in all mediums to achieve the end result. My work is for all income brackets. Sometimes I do crazy things, mostly I am immensely conservative allowing the stones to speak for themselves thus keeping my ego out of it.. No matter what the price of any particular piece made by me, it will always be made with care and consideration. “ Made with love. “

| Turquoise Tangerine,
Miss Chrisanne Baird | | turquoise tangerine knitted products are designed to be fun, functional but with a slightly ambiguous nature. The present quirky collection is inspired by a fascination with simple patterns and graphic forms. Colours are abundant and shoes, cars, women in dresses, arrows, and much more, all race about the surface of the soft furnishings. Cubes and cushions of varying sizes and dimensions can be played with, sat on or just admired. All products are presently made with knitted lambswool which has been felted for added strength and durability, but yet retains a soft and tactile quality.

Ms Ingrid Arthur | | My work is based on the history, landscape and archeology of the Shetland Islands. As a native Shetlander I feel part of the Islands history and use my Tapestry Weaving as a kind of visual storytelling, linking the past with the present.

| Driftwater Weaves,
Sallie Tyszko | | Sallie weaves tapestries on big floor looms. Tapestries strong, powerful, full of colour and texture. Sinuous lines thread their way across the landscapes. Luminous mohair undulates through the waves of the seascapes. Rocks informed by chunky great handspun enjoy the juxtaposition with light-filled skies, delicately hand-dyed. Sallie works for the joy of it, producing all sizes of tapestry for sale through exhibitions. Commissions are also undertaken. Unique. Exclusive. Irreplaceable. It's a passion. An affair of the heart to merge with sea, mountains, birds, fish and animals, the mysterious, subtle natural world, and to give it back visually, in colour, texture, and shape.

| Glasstorm Contemporary Glass Studio,
Mr Brodie Nairn | | Brodie’s recent work explores tension and balance. He contrasts outer surfaces with inner shapes, sensual curves with hard edges.
He calls the original blown a ‘pod’ and, with this organic image in mind with great precision, he cuts through the glass to reveal its structure. This dissected work creates a window into another world where dancing curves and open spaces contrast and unite.
In 2002 Brodie returned to his native Highlands of Scotland after a decade of making glass in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. During this time he has worked with many of the leading glass designers/makers within Europe and the USA.
Brodie has recently established a exciting new Highlands based contemporary glass studio ‘GLASSTORM’ based in Tain, Ross-shire with fellow glass artist Nichola Burns.
