Makers of the Month

Every month we feature makers from throughout the Highlands and Islands, many of whom are at the start of their careers and others who have been makers for several years, with experience of residencies, exhibitions and how it is to run a business.

Some of those featured have also received awards from the HI-Arts Makers Award Scheme. We hope that these features will be of interest and may inspire makers to apply for the awards scheme too.

For March 2010 we are featuring two makers from the Western Isles.

Netty Sopata is a textiles designer and maker who runs her company Diggory Brown from the Isle of Lewis. She talks to HI-Arts about her work, her recent success on Saville Row and at London Fashion Week and her collaberative project with fellow maker of the month Corinna Krause.

We also talk to Corinna Krause of Sollas Books. Corinna designs and makes handmade books and boxes and is based on the Isle of North Uist. Corinna tells us how she started making books, about her involvement with Art on the Map and the journey of her business to date.

The HI-Arts Makers Awards Scheme gives makers from the Highlands and Islands the opportunity to apply for funding towards developing their professional working practice.

This may be through attending a conference, purchasing new equipment, training and preparing for an exhibition.

If you have a project you would like to discuss or an idea you think may be appropriate for the Makers Award Scheme then please feel free to contact HI-Arts on craft@hi-arts.co.uk
