MIDAS Tip-Sheet 5: Soundcheck Basics

(Please note that a PDF version of this tip sheet can be downloaded at the right hand side of this page)

If you’re reading this you probably know what a soundcheck is. But just in case, it’s what you do at a gig before the audience comes in to make sure you’re band is set up and sounding right for the show.

As in everything else, preparation for the soundcheck is vital. There will be a lot to get through, time may be limited and it’s important to get things right for a good show. Here are a few points to remember:

Before:

  • Make sure string or drum head changes are done beforehand and instruments at least roughly tuned

  • Put new batteries in anything that needs them and check you have all your plecs, sticks and anything else you need

  • Be on time, about 15 minutes before your scheduled slot but not TOO early

  • Introduce yourself to the front of house engineer (and monitor engineer if there is one) and learn his or her name

  • Make sure the engineers have your mic/channel list to hand – if not, write one out

  • Stay off the stage until told to go on

  • If there’s another band soundchecking before you, don’t hassle them – wait your turn

  • Don’t drink alcohol

During:

  • Get plugged in and ready

  • Pay attention to what’s going on so you’re ready when called

  • If you need levels changed in your monitors, ask politely

  • When it’s time to play a whole song, pick one that everyone plays in and best represents your overall sound

  • Don’t play your instruments until it’s your turn to check

  • Don’t leave drinks lying around the stage or on top of amps

  • Don’t use the soundcheck to try out unrehearsed material

After:

  • Always stop playing when told to do so by the stage manager or crew

  • If there’s another band to soundcheck after you, gather up your instruments, leads, pedals and everything else you brought on and take it all to the side of the stage

  • If you need to pack things away, do it quickly

  • Thank the engineers

  • Check your set list ready for the show

  • Don’t hang around the stage when you’re done

  • If you’re really not happy about the onstage sound, talk to the sound crew privately – don’t create a fuss

REMEMBER… be polite, be professional, keep cool and all will be well!
