What is PAN?
PAN is an independent membership-led organisation, supporting all those who promote touring arts events in the
Highlands and Islands of Scotland
How long has PAN been going?
PAN was created in 1998. It grew from the old Highland Regional Council’s promoting forum. Some members have been promoting events for 20 years. Some have just started.
What area does PAN cover?
From Shetland to the very tip of the Mull of Kintyre; from the Western Isles to Moray. This is over half the geographical area of Scotland.
Who are its Members?
There are 90 groups in PAN in 2005. Some are in towns and cities. The majority are in small rural communities. They include:
voluntary-run promoting groups
village halls
small and large independent venues
Council-led arts venues
some festivals
associate individuals and groups.
What sorts of events do PAN members promote?
Collectively PAN members promote a wide range of professional arts events touring in the Highlands and
Islands . The artforms include:
Theatre
Children’s theatre
Music: traditional, jazz, fusion, classical, world
Performance dance
Comedy
The spoken word
Local events and ceilidhs

How many events do they promote?
PAN members collectively promote over 100 mainstream companies each year:- well over 1,000 performances to audiences averaging around 100.
Where do the Touring Companies come from?
Everywhere! Most touring theatre companies and music groups come from within , and many from with the Highlands and
Islands . But local venues are just as likely to be promoting good quality English-based theatre, and other companies and musicians from
Europe , and around the World.
What venues are used?
Most venues are Village halls and small arts centres. A growing number are equipped with lights, sound-systems and raked seating. Those that are basic in their technical provision make up for it with the warm welcome!

PAN is a source of information, advice and inspiration.
Networking – through keeping its members in touch andat twice-yearly gatherings.
Informing – through lists of potential events and the PANdrop newsletter.
Developing – through specific projects, such as in Audience Development
Enabling - through training events and projects.
Advocacy – acting as a voice in the wider arts scene.
