Over the past fifteen years the visual arts scene in Shetland has become more innovative and active.
Shetland Arts’ Bonhoga Gallery shows local, national and international art and craft exhibitions in a programme of ten shows per year in the main gallery, take away shows of art and craft in the Lower Gallery and a short film programme in the Stairwell Gallery. Satellite shows from Bonhoga can be seen at five venues throughout the isles and change every three months. Da Gadderie at the Shetland Museum and Archives and private galleries throughout the isles show a variety of work.
An artistic residency programme is housed at The Booth, an artists’ living/working space in Scalloway and is a partnership between Shetland Arts and Wasps Artists Studios.
In recent years, public art can be seen in Shetland, in the Scalloway Waterfront Art Trail and at the Shetland Museum and Archives.
Shetland has an active artists’ association – Veer North.
