The Booth Artists' Studio, Scalloway, Shetland
The Booth Artists' Studio, Scalloway, Shetland

THE BOOTH
Scalloway, Shetland Isles

The Booth has been rebuilt on the site of the oldest building in Scalloway, ancient capital of Shetland, the most northerly part of the British Isles.  Shetland is reached by ferry (14 hours) from Aberdeen or by air, with flights landing at Sumburgh Airport on the southern tip of Mainland.

The building, situated on the waterfront, consists of a living space with kitchen facilities, a shower-room suitable for disabled use, with a sleeping loft over half of the space reached by a ladder.  A computer, scanner and printer as well as a telephone, are available for use in the building.  The building basement is a space for 'dirty work' with concrete walls and a flagstone floor.  There is a paved area outside with a wall directly on to the sea.  The entire building is newly furnished.

Scalloway has a bus service to Lerwick the main town on Shetland, but to enjoy the islands it is preferable to be able to drive, either hiring a car for some of the time, or bringing your own vehicle.  Some of the schools where workshops are to be held are in remote parts of Shetland, although lifts to the schools may be able to be arranged.

There are two good general stores in the village open until 9pm most nights.  The North Atlantic Fisheries College has a restaurant, open Monday - Friday, and there is also a fish and chip shop close by.

The village is very picturesque but has a large pier area used by fishing boats and other vessels.
